Mabuhay!
I am continuing to analyze Encinal High School data.
Right now, am looking at Scholastic Aptitude Test
(S.A.T.) trends.  From what I can tell, Encinal has its
work cut out with respect to getting more kids to take
the SAT.

To be sure, not everyone has to take the SAT.  While
required by the University of California system, it is
not required by the California State University
system.  Prospective students interested in CSU or
private colleges such as St. Mary's or USF can take
either the SAT or the ACT.

There is also plenty of
debate about the SAT.  Kids in
affluent areas are better prepared for this test by
virtue of the quality of their respective school
systems, some argue,  an advantage often coupled
with expensive SAT coaching.

On average, 134 Encinal seniors take the SAT every
year (
Chart 1), or 50 percent of the class (Chart 2).
These figures are for the eight year period between
2000 and 2008.

By comparison, sixty-nine percent of the seniors at
Alameda High typically take the SAT each year.
(
Chart 3).  Nine-three percent of the seniors at
Piedmont take the test. (
Chart 4).

Since not all four-year colleges and universities
require this test, that approximately 50 percent of the
senior class don't take the SAT is not the end of the
world, so to speak.  Certainly not a scarlet letter.

But it is something worth noting because it's
tantamount to saying that half of the senior class is
not considering any of the schools in the University
of California system.

Data for this article come from the
California
Department of Education.
