Odds and ends: There's a lot of heated
discussion about the pros, cons of recent
decisions by Alameda's City Council
regarding the interim City Manager, at sites
such as blogging bayport, action alameda,
and alameda post.
These are serious matters worthy of
debate. But let's convey differences and
agreements in a civil manner. And let's
give our new Mayor, Marie Gilmore, the
courtesy of a honeymoon period, if you
will. And this applies to new Vice Mayor
Rob Bonta. Like all new voyages, there's
going to be bumps and bruises early on
but, because all of us are in the same boat,
it behooves us all to make that extra effort
to remember to also say nice things about
and to each other. I know Marie, Rob, Bev,
Doug, & Lena will do their level best for us.

Happy New Year! Wow, what a way to end
2010 and start 2011: yesterday morning I
walked from my s.o.'s place in the East
End, along Shoreline Drive to my place in
the West End. And back. Did so again this
morning. What a beautiful place we
Alamedans live in. The site of San
Francisco and the Bay Bridge in the
distance, or the rolling hills of the
peninsula to the west: it's just gorgeous.
As is walking along the Shoreline Drive
path, past the Elsie Romer bird sanctuary,
etc., etc. Don't take this for granted -- walk,
jog, or bike along Shoreline Drive,
especially in the morning.

Odds and ends: Kudos to City Hall and
Alamedan Jack Boerger for taking the time
to market Alameda and Alameda Point in
particular to the America's Cup crowd.
Apparently, this international yatch racing
event will bring much fanfare and money to
the region, and if the City and Boerger
have their way, Alameda businesses will
earn their share of the lucre. Check out his
web-site here, as well as stories in the
Chron's alamedaBlog (here and here).

Odds and ends: In a make or break NFL
play-off game today, Oakland- and
Cal-product Marshawn Lynch scored a
critical touchdown to help seal the victory
by the Seattle Seahawks over last year's
Super Bowl champs, the New Orlean
Saints. FYI: Lynch is a nephew of Alameda
Planning Board member Patrick Lynch.
More odds and ends: In August 2007,
then-presidential candidate Barak Obama
visited an Alameda West End resident in an
effort to better understand the plight of
home health care workers. While Pauline
Beck no longer resides there, that home is
located at the corner of Constitution\Pacific
(go to 1:05). I lived two doors down at the
time and remember well the early-morning
commotion caused by the visit - Obama
was battling for the party's nomination.

The Island posted a must-read story about
School, and tireless efforts there in pursuit
of excellence by staff and PTA, especially
PTA Pres. Lorrie Murray.
Murray and Principal Judy Goodwin are
addressing head on in a positive manner
misconceptions (or, more precisely,
"conventional wisdoms") that, often
repeated, get taken for granted as true.
Kudos to Murray and school staff for
right-framing the West End narrative. The
West End is an incredibly diverse part of
town. Residents here wouldn't have it any
other way, because they understand
positives far outweigh real or imagined
negatives: it takes involved and attentive
citizens to ensure that.
Indeed, while we mustn't over-romanticize
the West End, let's also guard against
dwelling on negatives that perpetuate
"conventional wisdoms" the likes of which
John Kenneth Galbraith warned years ago.

Odds and ends: photos I took from a
Webster Street, including the Tuesday
Farmers' Market. By the way, that's
Mrs. Canalin shopping for apples.
